I found a “cryptarithm” or “verbal arithmetic” puzzle over at Futility Closet and I thought I’d blog about it. Futility Closet features perhaps the most famous cryptarithm, one written by Henry Dudeney and published in the July 1924 issue of Strand Magaizine. It looks like this:
SEND
+ MORE
=MONEY
Here, each letter represents a specific digit. With the right substitutions, the equation will be true. One that I remember trying in high school went something like this:
COCA
+ COLA
= SODA
According to wikipedia, the puzzle goes back to at least 1864 and the inventor is unknown. For more examples of cryptarithms, check out the cryptarithm page on Logicville or a site called Cryptarithms Online.
