Through Digg, I found a nice collection of Rebus Puzzles on a site called Fun With Words.  There’s 100 puzzles on this site.  It’s a good spot to stop by for some diversion.

Computers Solving Crosswords

From the United Press International site:  A computer program called WebCrow recently defeated 25 people in a crossword competition at the European Conference on Artificial Intelligence.  The crosswords used for the competition were in English and Italian, with the English puzzles selected from the New York Times and the Washington Post.

I have two major questions after reading this article.  First, how long did it take WebCrow to solve the puzzles?  i.e.  Was it close?  Or did WebCrow solve the puzzles so quickly that it blew the people out of the water?  Second, who were the human contestants?  As best I can tell, they were conference attendees.  How would WebCrow fare against Tyler Hinman?

In any case, it’s an amazing accomplishment.  There’s some discussion of how WebCrow actually solves crosswords on the sites that I’ve linked.
