I came across a new kind of puzzle called shinro that can be found in Southwest Airline magazines. According to the magazine, shinro is Japanese for “compass bearing.” The puzzle involves finding holes in a square grid. Like battleship puzzles, the number of holes in each row and column are indicated. In addition, there are a number of arrows in the grid that point to at least one hole.
I can’t find any other examples of this specific kind of puzzle on the web. So, I’m interested to hear if anyone else has found some. I’m also interested in trying to make some of my own shinro or shinro-like puzzles. So keep an eye out for that.

You can find more of these puzzles at

Pleast note that the rules are slightly different: An arrow points to exactly one star (= hole), not to at least one star.

Yeah! I was just on Southwest last night and solved 4 shinro puzzles. Thanks for the info!
I love’em too. Thinking of writing either a game either for PC, PDA, or maybe online (Shockwave). Any feedback appreciated.

Here’s a new website (www.shinropuzzles.com) with some Shinro puzzles, along with a guide on how to solve them. More puzzles will be added in the future. Enjoy!

There is an AWESOME iPhone shinro app. Just search for Shinro on the itunes store. Cant miss it, its the only one. Very nice app!
There’s a Shinro puzzles iPhone application called “Shinro Mines” which is very good.
The best shinro iphone app is called “Jabeh”. Great interface and design. A lot better than shinro the iphone app.
another Shinro app came out on the app store, but it’s called ‘Jabeh’. it’s much nicer looking than the Shinro apps.
Another app for the iPhone has come out called MoShinRo. It’s much faster paced than Jabeh, and it has an unlimited number of puzzles. It’s also cheaper for now.
It is great game, a like puzzle game because you must think a lot
Me too! Southwest flight! landed, thirsty for more.
I also flew on Southwest Airlines and was hooked!!! I Love IT!!!!
Just discovered the Shinro puzzles on a flight on Southwest and am hooked.
Shinropuzzles.com seems to be no longer in business and while the German site has them, the language difference makes the site difficult. Anyone have any new ideas?
