GeekDad: Puzzle of the Week

Just a quick note.  The blog GeekDad in the Wired blog network had a post today that featured a puzzle.  The puzzle was a timer puzzle similar to many that you may have seen before.  How do you measure out 9 minutes with a 4 minute egg timer and a 7 minute egg timer?  The more exciting aspect of this post is the suggestion that “Puzzle of the Week” may become a regular column on GeekDad.

Blog Roundup 05/05/08

  • Bozzball’s puzzling world is featuring four new puzzle types this month.  Including: Fillomino, Futoshiki, Ripple Effect, and Tents and Trees.  There’s also the promise of new puzzle types coming in June.  Which reminds me… it’s been a long time since I wrote a post on a puzzle type…
  • Passion for Puzzles has a post about a game called Scorching Earth.  The post compares the game to migration, but I think it’s a pretty loose resemblance.  For starters, Scorching Earth is much more challenging.  It’s also less of a maze and more of a fill-in-all-of-the-squares puzzle.

The Puzzle Page

I’ve found a new puzzle related blog called The Puzzle Page.  The blog posts a regular brain teaser and has some little puzzle games that you can play in the sidebar.  I’ll be including posts from this blog in my blog roundups in the future.

Postcards from Anna Graham

Postcards from Anna Graham is a new site billing itself as: “The world’s only puzzle/travel blog.” If you haven’t figured it out already, the puzzles on the site are anagrams and they’re presented in a unique way. Each puzzle is a postcard that Anna has sent from the place she is visiting in her travels. A few of the phrases in the postcard are highlighted and they don’t entirely make sense in the context. These are the anagrams and the challenge is to solve the anagrams so that the postcard makes sense. Each postcard ends with a trivia question that the anagrams will help you solve. You do this by taking a look at one of the answer cards Anna has provided. They list the anagrams and provide squares to fill in the answers. Some of the squares are greyed out. Rearranging the letters that fall into these squares give you the answer to the trivia question. If you’re ever really stuck, you can take a look at the front of the postcard to see where Anna is sending it from.

All in all, the site is pretty clever. Enjoy!

Solve One Puzzle A Day

I’ve found a new blog for puzzle lovers, and the name says it all: Solve One Puzzle A Day. As promised, the blog features a new puzzle or brainteaser every day. Most of the puzzle seem to be math related. Enjoy!

Puzzlin Craft

Puzzlin Craft bills itself as “Just another WordPress weblog.”  It also happens to be dedicated to puzzles.  The puzzles here seem to be strictly word puzzles, including crosswords.  The puzzles would probably appeal to fans of NPR Sunday Puzzle.  It’s a very new blog, having started only in the beginning of this month, but it seems like there will be one or two posts per week.  It’s a good start for a new puzzle blog.

Puzzlinks.com Turns 1

Puzzlinks

A year ago today, I made my first post on Puzzlinks.com. To celebrate the first birthday of this site, I’ve given it a new look. Interestingly, after changing page layout a few times in the past year, the links are once again in the left sidebar (along with everything else.) And I’m still looking for a better way to organize them.

Spot The Seven

Through Digg, I found a blog called Spot The Seven where a new puzzle is posted daily.  The type of puzzle on Spot The Seven is a familiar one, showing up in children’s activity books and WPC qualifying tests alike.  You are shown two nearly identical pictures and challenged to find the seven differences.  I’m impressed that a new puzzle is posted daily, including puzzles appropriate for the day like a recent MLK puzzle.

A Puzzle for Charity

I recently came across a site called rustyredrock.com that features a “puzzle for charity.” The site’s puzzle page features a puzzle to be solved and offers a cash prize for solving it with an equivalent amount going to charity. The amount of money in the prize pool and the charity pool currently stands at $68 and goes up by a dollar every day. The current puzzle is some sort of cipher that must be solved (you must also provide a reason for your solution.)

It seems like there may be more puzzles coming after the current puzzle is solved. In any case, check it out while the prize is still being offered.

Puzzlinks.com goes live!

Puzzlinks.com is a new blog dedicated to puzzles of all kinds. I will also be collecting links to puzzle sites all over the web. Currently, the links are categorized and listed in the left sidebar. New links will be added all the time and, in the coming weeks, I’m hoping to devise a better way of searching the links that I’ve collected.

So stay tuned! There’s more to come.
