Pentomino Website

I got an email today about a web site dedicated to pentominoes.  Currently, the site is running a competition for readers to solve a pentomino sudoku.  It is similar to a standard sudoku, but the grid is made up of pentominoes and the numbers in each pentomino sum to 22.  Enjoy!

GamePuzzles

Through the Wired blog Geekdad, I came across the web site for Kadon Enterprises. Kadon apparently owns the trademark on the term “gamepuzzle.” Their products are games that can be played competitively by multiple players. Or by a single player in a form that more resembles solving a puzzle. The blog post talks a little about the lasers used to make the puzzles. If you like pentominoes, this is probably a good site to check out. Pentominoes seem to be a major feature of a number of their games.

Pentomino Sudoku

Through Science News Online, I came across this Belgian site that features pentomino sudokus.  I’ve always found pentominos interesting and they often turn up in puzzles, so the idea of combining pentominoes and sudoku is an interesting one.  What they have come up with so far are jigsaw sudokus that use pentominos to form the sections (both 5X5 and 10X10 sudokus.)

When I see these puzzles, I want to break them apart into their component pentominos and then have the puzzler reassemble the pieces and solve the sudoku.  I’m not sure how well thiswould work, but it would be an interesting idea to explore futher.
